Muie Rendera

“Muie Rendera” is a song we sing in choir. It’s an arrangement of two Brazilian folk songs, “Muie Rendera” and “Lampeao.” Muie Rendera is the main soprano line, and the one I sing. I like the song because it’s not about Jesus with MN pretending it’s not, and it doesn’t incite racism controversy. And it’s pretty. Yeah.

Rough translation of Muie Rendera: “Hey, lacemaker woman! Hey, lacemaker woman! If you teach me how to weave, I will teach you how to flirt!”

Today, I got my cyborg brace relegated to “wear it whan you deem it necessary.” A ritual that my dad and I have for every hospital visit is that we visit a coffee shop near the Hospital for Special Surgery on York Avenue. (It’s a few blocks north of the HSS. I have forgotten the name but if I remember I will post it here!) It serves the best chai tea ever. If you’re in the area go. Anyway, Marcelo and Mari, the owners of the coffee shop, know me and my dad and gave me a free biscotti today. My dad and I usually talk to them, and they mentioned that they had immigrated from Brazil in 1982. I said “I’m doing a Brazilian folk song in choir, do you know this?” and started singing Muie Rendera. They immediately recognized it and started singing it.

For all I know, asking a Brazilian if they know Muie Rendera is like asking an American if they know Oh Susanna. But what I did learn today is: MN’s Portuguese sucks.
