Music Recommendation #2
Big Star!
Big Star was a power pop band from Memphis, that released three albums in the 1970s. The surviving members plus some new members also released an album in 2005, but I have not heard it yet. They’re one of the most underappreciated bands that I know of, and definitely could use some listens. So listen!
Thirteen: off their first album. Elliott Smith and Garbage also covered it. Alex Chilton (one of the singer/songwriters in it; the other one is Chris Bell) apparently wrote it when he was 13.
In the Street: any That 70’s Show fans reading this? It should sound familiar…
Watch the Sunrise: my first Big Star song. I actually got into them through last.fm radio, when I was listening to similar artists of Teenage Fanclub.
Mod Lang: Very catchy.
Femme Fatale: Yay Velvet Underground covers!
Chris Bell, the other singer songwriter, left the band right before the second album (he contributed to it) and died in 1978. He’s gotten some exposure recently because one of his songs was used in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. (Should I see it? Yes? No? What do the readers think?) Alex Chilton’s still with the band, and hes gotten a very awesome Replacements song written about him. (Maybe I’ll do my next recommendation on them…)
