It started out like any other CTY reunion, with hanging out in the Time Warner Center and getting food at Whole Foods. But the difference this time: there were 24 FREAKIN’ PEOPLE!!! J.L. the guy, J.L. the girl, A.R. Pedobear, F.E., M.F., Turtle, and S.B. were there (regular fixtures) but: the third J.L., D.S., V.W., and lots other people were there too, and they almost never get to reunions!

We had a large game of Silent Football in Borders, and the staff actually didn’t kick us out. M.W. was Mr. Dictator (or Mr. Ducktator, to be exact.) Then we all ran out to Central Park, and danced to Canon in the snow. (I did the Time Warp without dislocating a kneecap this time, yelled out all the callbacks along with A.R. Pedobear, did the DMD in the snow, and ran to End Of The World until Max yelled to change direction, when I couldn’t run that fast and got separated because I was on the end.)

And I don’t know how this happened, but an ACTUAL PEDOBEAR SHOWED UP IN THE PARK!

Well, anyway, then we went to Grand Central, (the subway and people getting lost was epically bad) ate Junior’s, called E.M. to wish him a happy birthday (I organized a giant singing over speakerphone to Virginia!) and then it was time to leave, unfortunately. If you know what I’m even talking about, pics will be up on Facebook later today.

For those of you who do not know what this is, Honesty Box is a facebook application that allows users to anonymously send a message to the person with the box. The only information the recipient will get about the sender is their gender.

I cannot say how much I hate this application.

Why anonymity? I can only think of two reasons why one would want or need to send an anonymous message; if you wanted to insult someone or anonymously declare a crush on someone. Hiding behind the Honesty Box is one of the most cowardly things I can think of for one to do, if they wanted to send that message.

On the topic of insults. When I had an honesty box, I got insulted all the time. The last message I recieved was from a girl, and it read along the lines of “ur so fuckn ugly and retarted i hope u get hit by a car and die.” Thanks, whoever you are. It’s just lovely to know that. Did you know that only “friends” can see my profile? Therefore, you consider me a “friend,” because you certainly could see it, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to write in it. Now I don’t know about you, but in my humble opinion, “friends” do not wish their “friends” dead.

Now for crushes. I have not been on the recieving end of any of these messages, but I know people who have been. Their reactions were mostly unified, along the lines of “well, someone likes me, why doesn’t he/she tell me?” One reaction was more “Honesty Box? Probably a creeper.” People! If you like someone, TELL THEM–PERSONALLY! (I really need o follow my own advice more.) But on that point. It doesn’t work to declare love anonymously, especially in pink or blue text. It’ll probably drive whoever it is you desire away. In my experiences, people are attracted to confidence.

I was on the recieving end of an insult last spring. It was from someone who I thought was a somewhat friendly acquaintance. However, what made me respect her more was that she told me–in person–that I was a bitch, and that I wasn’t allowed to sit at her lunch table anymore. I emigrated to another lunch table and was much happier for the rest of the year, so I think I was better off without her in the long run.

When I ranted about the honesty box to EG, she said, ” I post compliments in people’s boxes.” Why must compliments be anonymous? Why tell someone that they are smart, or that they’re a great friend, over the interwebs? Why not personally? Are people actually afraid to compliment each other? It makes no sense.

I encourage people not to use Honesty Box. If you’re on my facebook friend list, you’ll notice I’m in a group called “I got an Honesty Box for you-it’s called the INBOX!” So use it! Or use the phone. Or say it to my face. Whatever suits your fancy.

What does it mean to accept someone as a friend on Facebook? (Friend is not a verb. I will not acknowledge it as such.) In my opinion, you give people a bit more information than they know already-or perhaps not. But I can tell you; I would never know anything about 2/3rds of the people on my friend list had it not been for Facebook. I know the favorite movies, music, and TV shows of people that I have probably only spoken a few sentences to. I would never know these things otherwise. I control what I tell my Facebook profile, because I don’t want people knowing everything about me.

What I find most worrying about the Facebook profiles of most people is that by the click of a mouse, you can find out their relationship status-whether they’re single, they’re taken, or “it’s complicated.” I never will list my relationship status on Facebook. I made that decision a few months ago, after relationship changes started being listed on the news feed. In my personal opinion, one should have to tell only the people that they want to tell about their relationship status change when it happens. If they want to tell all of their people that they list as “friends” on Facebook, so be it; that is their prerogative. But I know that if I was to magically gain a boyfriend (Boys near me got the dip in the shallow end of the gene pool for looks. there are a few exceptions but I don’t associate with them.) , I would tell people individually and not tell all five hundred and something people that I list as friends.

When I did have a long-distance boyfriend, he listed himself as in a relationship while I did not. Because there was a severe communication deficit between us, I had no idea if the listing even referred to me, because he did not send me a relationship “request.” Once I called and broke it off, his status went back to single, letting everyone on his friend list know that he was now single.

The ridiculousness of the “it’s complicated” relationship status makes me laugh. Unless it’s a fake relationship, listing yourself as “it’s complicated” invites a LOT of gossip and speculation about your relationship or non-relationship, which in my point of view is a Very Bad Thing. If you list your status as it’s complicated, it’s interpreted differently by everyone. It’s complicated could mean that you’re fighting, that you’re long distancing, that you hooked up and may hook up again, or a lot of other things. Again, it’s likely that one will give the full story to those that they trust, and the ones that one doesn’t trust will get nothing. But wait! The ones that you don’t trust did get something-an indication that you are somewhat romantically involved. And would you really want them to know that?

Back in 4th grade, my class in the gifted kids program (Explorations) spent a whole class talking about if animals would understand more if we talked to them like they’d understand everyday human conversation. My teacher for that was awesome, and unfortunately deceased now. Post on that coming October 27.
